My journey started many months ago when God started calling me, but sitting here in Honduras I’m not sure it’s all real. This first month the whole squad is together and it may be just that; training camp all over again but in a different country. I keep waiting for it to hit me that I am really gone and going to be traveling to all these different places.
One thing that has helped is each team has a project that we are working on here at Zion’s Gate. My team has a big section of yard that is riddled with rocks and huge holes. We are also making a flower garden around one of the trees. I know that doesn’t sound like much but to get the ground ready we have to use pick axes and long metal pry bars to break up the ground. We are using the small rocks to fill in the holes around the yard some so we don’t have to use as much dirt. Then the dirt that we are digging out of the flower garden has to be sifted to get the rocks out so we can use the dirt. When all is done we are going to paint saying on rocks to put along with the flower/plants in the garden. We work on these projects Monday through Wednesday.
On Thursdays we go to Ihnfa, which is like a juvey home. The girls are between the ages of 14 and 19, but some of them were younger. There are some with special needs and an infant room. We sang songs, shared some testimonies, and set up different stations so we can do activities with them. Like brushing their hair and braiding it with beads, paint their nails, make bracelets or necklaces, and draw with sidewalk chalk. The girls really seemed to like all the attention.
Fridays we do something called Taken it To the Streets. It is a pretty big thing there and has made the news a couple of times. We go and stand on busy street corners with signs that have little messages like Jesus love you, smile God is with you, honk if you love Jesus, and Jesus saved me. Some others play music on guitars and sing or pass out candy with verses. It is pretty cool to see people’s reactions and smiles.
