Heya friends and family,
For those of you who would like to know what it is I’ve been up to for the past few months, well, you’re in luck. Due to my teammates competitiveness, I am now having to give the world a glimpse into my life.
“Loveshack”
A name chosen for its irony, but somehow rings true. After a long bus ride from Johannesburg and a short little train ride from Cape Town, we arrived at Momma Beulah’s house in Steenberg. We quickly learned that all 18 of us would be sharing four bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms. We learned even quicker that Momma and Pastor Richard are some of the most hospitable, patient people we would probably ever meet. They have opened their arms to us, accepting us no matter how many messes we make, how many windows or dishes we break, or how loudly we laugh or shout at night. Shockingly, I have become the one who looks surprised when someone asks us how on earth we can live with 21 other people.
Ministry
Ministry has varied slightly during our stay. However, the prevailing thing seems to be children’s ministry. During the month of December we ran a week long holiday program and shared the good news of Jesus in the squares and trains between Steenberg and Cape Town. The girls of our house ran a five day VBS in the notorious Lavender Hill. Lavender Hill is heavily under the grip of drugs and domestic violence. Even though that week was pretty tough at times it was worth it to see the enthusiasm the kids showed during daily devotions. Since Lavender Hill we have been helping out an understaffed school in West Lake, and running and after school program for the same kids. All of the kids we’ve met have been crazy but brimming over with potential and laughter.
Surfing
Before South Africa I had never surfed a day in my life. Now I can easily say that surfing is one of my favorite sports and definitely my favorite past time here in Cape Town. I love the challenge, the stunning views from the water and the time spent with great friends.
Hillsong
From the time that I was maybe 7 or 8, I had listened to Hillsong United. Therefore, it was super rad to to go Century City, Somerset West, and Summer Fest here in Cape Town. The people at church were super friendly and welcoming which made for an even better experience.
Pop Collar
How am I to describe Pop Collar in one Paragraph? Kayla: a gem, my go to person for deep conversations and spontaneous excursions. Sydney: the one who introduced me to Fetty Whap, and the one who keeps me laughing. Jack: my go to person for surfing adventures and wisdom. Rye: caring and comic relief. Rye keeps us on our toes. Maddux: A quiet fun loving personality, who is an amazing example of a man following God. Team Pop Collar as a whole: insane yet peaceful
Welp, thats all for now folks
