Subject: Valentines Day

I have no idea when you’re reading this, but, just to clarify, I’m writing it on Valentines Day.

Whew, now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about something.

Today, the guys on my squad got up early to serve the women. We walked the 1/2 mile down to the well and we pumped then carried the numerous 20 liter jugs of water up hill. We made and served the women breakfast. Then we have them all the day of while we went to do construction ministry by ourselves (that’s 10 guys doing the work assigned to 44 people). We then made lunch and we’ve the women again. We have made individual cards for every woman on our squad. We have walked long and far to purchase lots of chocolate to give them tonight after dinner, which we will also make and serve to our squad ladies. After that, or plan is to entertain them by a comedy sit in which we will do mock winter Olympics (since we are in Africa, where there is no such thing as winter). And then we will cap it all off worth a night of feet washing.

But shh. Don’t tell them. As I am writing this, they don’t know. We only disclose each surprise as its time comes.

Yea, I know, you’re all probably floored that we would make such a huge deal about Valentines Day, especially when we are in the bush in Senga Bay, Malawi, Africa. But it’s not Valentines Day that we are celebrating so much as it is jesus.

We as men chose to serve the many Godly women of Z squad not for Valentines Day, but for the sake of love. Love, who came to earth in a guide of flesh. Love, who rejected his Holy equality with God, and came to serve mankind.

Scripture even tells us that men should love and serve women as Christ loved and served the church.

So for me, today has little to do with Valentines Day and much more to do with living a life like Christ.

No matter what today is for you, I encourage you to pick someone and lavish your time, services, and love upon them. You don’t need any specific reason. Just do it. And when they ask why you’re going all out for them, just tell them the way jesus loves them and the way he sees them. Especially tell them about how Jesus went all out for them. In doing this, you have just shared the gospel in what might be one of the most moving ways we can do so.

I encourage you: love lavishly.
