Today we are observing the Sabbath, and what better way to relax than go to the beach (I’m honestly not sure if going to the beach is technically allowed). One of the great things about the beach here is that there are trees about 100 yards from the water, which are perfect for hammocks. After a few hours on the beach we were getting ready to pack up our things when I requested that one of our team mates take a picture of Amanda and I before leaving. And that’s when we realized our camera was no longer ours but now belongs to someone new.
I felt like I could throw up.

We’d been as careful as we could. How could this happen? We’ve left everything we know to go on this crazy journey around world and now this. Amanda and I were both devastated, one of the things we enjoyed the most, gone. But that’s just it, the camera is just a thing. It’s a lesson for Amanda and I to remember to hold our possessions in an open hand. Easy come, easy go as they say. Nothing is truly ours to begin with.

While Amanda and I were processing the loss of our camera, I was reminded of how much we still have and how much we have to be thankful for. We are thankful that we are loved by God. We are thankful for a family that loves us, supports us, and is storing all of our stuff and taking care of our dog. We are thankful for friends that are always there for us and stay up to the wee hours of the night to Skype with us. We are thankful for a brilliant and fun loving dog who I know will not forget us. We are thankful for our support family who has ensured that we were fully funded before we left on our trip and who leave us comments on our blog. We are thankful for the opportunity to see the world and share God’s grace with others.

And that’s just to name a few things. Ultimately even in the moments we feel that we’ve been screwed and that the world is out to get us, we still have something to be thankful for.
