today, i watched a dog lose a limb.

it was such an exciting surgery
to participate in.
i could not stop smiling.
it was bloody,
time-consuming,
and physically draining.
but it had to be done.

this dog was young,
had everything going for her.
still, an aggressive form of cancer
had started laying waste to her left femur.
in regards to
her best quality of life,
having three legs
would be a
small price to pay.

first cut separates the skin.
second cut glides through the fat.
then it's all about
ripping muscle,
lacerating vessels,
snapping ligaments
until the body is free
of a very familiar thing that could ultimately kill it.

i wonder how many times
we have dug in my heels
and vehemently rejected
the hand of God
over our circumstances
for the sake of
no pain,
no change.
that's more disturbing to me.

Father,
thank You for being the Great Physician
you point out the source of problem.
you cut out all infection.
masterfully Your word cuts
and poetically Your word mends.
i want to be a doctor,
just like You.
in Jesus' name,
AMEN
