this week, my team is set to work at the local daycare in Victor Raul district.

ever the idealist, my face has retained its perma-smile
at the thought of working directly with children, big or small.
this place is rough to live in as an adult. imagine the struggles of being a child.
the streets are a dangerous place. darkness has a physical presence.

but our contact Brenda is taking us to the front lines with her.
she has a classroom at the Inca Link daycare or guaderia.
from the depths of where six feet of garbage used to lay
stands this beautiful testament of God's delight and glory in the midst of desolation.
her class is about 10-15 kids in size
but the building is designed to facilitate 200+ children of all different ages.

these kids are in absolute need, not just economically.
Some of their stories are laced with murder and abuse and neglect,
at the hands of other children but also adults.
in the local community, there are 110 kids that attend right now
for a meal and crafts and much needed discipline.
while supplies for cutting and pasting and painting
would nuture creativity and benefit their outlook on childhood,
long-term spiritual support is what Brenda needs
because the labor of hearing and knowing all the stories
is too much to shoulder without helping hands.

we are told, explicitly more or less, that these kids are tiny monsters.
real lions could take lessons from them on being unruly.
i can't pinpoint the reason why but this actually upsets me.
the last thing i want is to be set up with a complex of hopelessness toward a child.
this will be a challenge that I choose to accept.

today however, we will accompany Brenda to a neighboring sector of houses to meet and teach those kids about the Gospel. they have never before been introduced to the redeeming love of God through Christ, so i immediately understand the gravity of the situation. everything I might do would be under the watchful eyes of people quite literally in the balance of salvation. the Holy Spirit will do exactly what is promised in the Word.
