Y’all, I had the most amazing revelation today when I was praying with my squad: Plants grow against gravity.

Let me elaborate on how cool this is. Gravity is crucial for the operation of our earth. If you throw something in the air, it comes back down. Duh. You stand because gravity keeps your feet on the ground. Children get cuts and scrapes daily because they fall. But then why do plants grow opposite of the force of gravity? Why do they grow upward?

Generally speaking, plants get their energy from light, so they have high sensitivities to the position of their light source. They bend different ways depending on where they are getting their energy. Well I interpret this as, they don’t care a whole lot about gravity. They only care about where the light is.

Here are two lessons that I’ve learned from this information:

Number 1.

Our growth should resemble that of a plant. Plants live in the earth and among other plants, but they grow against the earth. They constantly seek something that is not of the earth. Isn’t that what we should be doing as Christ followers? Yes, we live in the world and among other people, but we should be constantly seeking something that is not of the world. We should constantly be seeking Christ, our LIGHT! We are called to live a life that is against the culture of the world, a life that is against gravity.

Number 2.

A plant doesn’t always grow toward the sun, specifically. For instance, if you place a lamp near an indoor plant, it will bend toward the lamp, making it twist and turn in ways that it was not intended to turn. I think that this can be true for our own lives. We can become distracted by things that we think will bring us energy and rest, but they really hurt us by making us twist and turn into ways that were not intended for us. When we fix our eyes on other things besides Christ, we are actually growing in a way that will hurt us. We are more likely to wilt.

I wanted to share this because I constantly find myself seeking things that are either false lights that bring temporary relief but long-term manipulation or things that are found in our worldly culture. These things will never satisfy my needs for the true light. I will never grow the way that I was intended to. Christ is the ONLY light that will grow me into the person I was designed to be.

I wish that I could accurately describe my reactions and excitement when the Lord revealed this truth to me. I was oh-so giddy to share this revelation with my squad and now with you. So I did.
