This month my ministry group is going to Hope Home, a special needs orphanage. These kids are a variety of ages and have a variety of special needs. All are absolutely precious and created by God! Here’s what I’ve learned from my time there: a victory is a victory, and size doesn’t matter. For a lot of my life I thought that success was only true success if it was big and monumental. Over time I’ve learned that that isn’t always the case, and I have begun to see smaller victories as success. This realization has only deepened as I’ve spent time with these kids who face so many challenges, and it’s changing how I view life as well.
At Hope Home, here’s what victory looks like:
-
Moving your hand in the right direction with minimal assistance
-
Not stopping at the intersection only once while on a walk
-
Eating a cookie
-
Using your feet to form a word
-
Drinking a cup of water
-
Making it through a full day at school
In life, here’s what victory looks like:
-
Initiating a one-on-one with a squadmate
-
Speaking up during a tough conversation
-
Volunteering to pray in front of a group of people you don’t know well
-
Having a conversation with a stranger on the street
-
Writing a blog
-
Allowing yourself to look like a fool at a waterpark
“You’re my victory, reason why I sing.”
Every victorious moment, big or small, is from Jesus. This makes each victory a reason to celebrate. My prayer is that God gives me eyes to see every victory, no matter how small or insignificant it originally seems.
“No, in all these things we are more than victorious through Him who loved us.”
(Romans 8:37)
