Our ministry included working at El Refugio Cafe which serves lunch from Monday through Saturday, 12-3 PM. They have a cook and she prepares one menu for the day (makes serving easy). We would rotate serving and working in the kitchen. For $2.50, your meal includes popcorn, juice, soup, entrée and dessert. It’s a lot! Unfortunately, I don’t have any photos of me waitressing so you get all the details. 🙂
Before the cafe, we had English Club for first two weeks and Vacation Bible School for the third week from Monday through Friday, 9-11 AM.
We handed out flyers around the neighborhood for a couple of days and these are the kids that showed up.
Above (from left to right): English Club. 1. Santiago and his penguin. He was so hard on himself whenever he would mess up. He called his penguin “feo” which is so untrue. 2. Pakarina, Valentina & Genesis love to give hugs after class. 3. They’re watching me close during origami day. 4. Popsicle project. 5. Penguin group photo. 6. Finished origami hearts. 7, 8 & 9. Parts of the Body project. We had them trace themselves.
Above (from left to right): VBS. 1. Cristopher & Maria Paz just hanging around. 2 & 3. Look at those faces! 4. We were running behind & the children were out of control so we used cameras to calm them down. 5. YouTube helped us a lot during these past weeks.
The last day of VBS, my favorite day. We asked the kids what they learned throughout the week about Jesus. At the end, we asked if there was anyone who would like to invite Jesus into their hearts. The bottom pictures were you can see their hands up. Señorita Evelyn lead the sinner’s prayer with them. I don’t know if I’ll ever see these kids again but I will in heaven.
Above (from left to right): Movie Nights, Despicable Me & Despicable Me 2. 1. Inti & Chasqui are brothers and the oldest kids we had. They helped us served the snacks to the little ones. Such good boys. 2. Shout out to McDonald’s for providing our minion crowns. 3. These girls showed up 30 minutes early so selfies to kill time. 4. We had a piñata and used the selfie stick to break it open, ha.
