The sign read “Abrazo Gratis.” Which means “Free Hugs.” I stood in the middle of the boardwalk holding the sign. We were working with a youth group and planned a boardwalk evangelism this past Saturday night. We planned for skits, hair wraps and free hugs.
I wasn’t feeling well earlier that day and thought about staying behind from ministry. My team would have understood. I didn’t and I’m glad I pressed on. The “Abrazoton” (Hug-a-thon) turned out to be one of my favorite ministry nights in Colombia.
I’ve been told I give pretty decent hugs, check my references. My team knows this fact about me and I was volunteered. “Hug a Filipina!” was the gimmick they wanted to use. I didn’t object. I mean if I was going to create a ministry, it would involve hugs. Lots of them.
Back in November 2014, I shared my story about going on the race to anyone who would listen. My friends were constantly asking me questions and very supportive. Some friends were not so supportive. One of them inquired, “..you don’t even speak Spanish, what would you do in Latin America?” To which I responded with, “..um I didn’t know I needed Spanish to hug someone and share the love of Jesus?” Yes, I could have been less sassy with my answer but he was sassy first!
Many moons later, the Lord had fulfilled my desire. For one amazing and lovely night, I was able to share Jesus and plant seeds with just a hug. As strangers came up for free hugs, I felt my spirit so different and joyful. What was a sour day ended so so sweetly. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you for sending the following people my way: (1) Amparo, the sweet lady who has seen us at church; (2) the three drunk men who were just having a good time; (3) the siblings who came back for thirds and fourths; (4) Nikolas, may he continue to seek the truth about you and you pursue him and (5) everyone else, I can’t wait to see them in heaven!
I don’t have any pictures from the evening but you get the idea.
