Hi all,
It’s been a really great month and a half for me on the field. I have spent the majority of the time working with children. In Thailand, we worked with children at a high risk to be sold into human trafficking with an organization called Remember Nhu. Remember Nhu provides children with a home and food while sending them to public primary and secondary school. This month in Cambodia my team is working with New Hope Orphanage. At New Hope, we spend most of our time playing with kids as they are currently on school vacation.
Both of these ministries are uplifting and rejuvenating for two primary reasons. The first is obvious. A smile on a young kids face could brighten anyone’s day because of the unique sense of innocence it displays. Also, playing with kids is always going to be more fun than digging a ditch. After all, How could you not have fun sliding around in the mud trying to kick a soccer ball?
The second reason these ministries have been uplifting was a lot less easy to come to terms with. At the end of July, I had the wonderful experience of being able to do ministry with my parents in Chiang Mai, Thailand. For some reason, we were assigned bar ministry as our primary job. What this entails is walking into a bar and talking to a prostitute with the hope of befriending them. If a relationship does form, it can lead to sharing Christ with them and telling them about the other options they have. To answer your question, yes, yes this was awkward to do with mom! Here’s the really sad part of this ministry, it has a 4% success rate. It fails 96% of the time! Of course, we fight for a celebrate the 4% it saves, but that’s a sad statistic. For many of these girls and guys, once they get into the bars, it’s really too late. That’s why Remember Nhu and New Hope are so uplifting: for what they save there kids from.
These past two months have been two of my favorite on the Race. Sometimes, it’s hard to see that what we’re doing is making any tangible difference in the world. With these two ministries, though, I can honestly and confidently say that the world is a better place because of their work.
God Bless and Go Blue,
Chance
