Ok y’all-confession time- I have listened to All I Want for Christmas is You (by Mariah Carey, of course) about five times a day a day, every day, all month. When I hear those bells at the beginning of the song, I know it’s time to crank the radio.
These are the lyrics to the chorus:
I don’t want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don’t care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true oh
All I want for Christmas is you
In this song, all Mariah Carey wants is this guy, and she is obviously very fixated on it. I think this is very common for teenagers, in this exact sense, and for other things. Sure, we have all sang this song and had a person in mind, but it’s not always a person. We, as humans, get caught it the trap- that if we have that ONE thing, our lives will be perfect. I call it the “earthly trap.” For Mariah Carey, it’s the guy she is singing the song about. For you it might be something else- owning those Tory Burch sandals, getting into UF, becoming captain of the baseball team, getting a date to prom. Only you know what your “earthly trap” is, the thing we believe will fulfill us, the thing we worship, place on a pedestal, and almost make take the place of God.
Usually at church and youth group, we are told that these things will never fulfill you, and will leave you more broken than before. I can agree that nothing will fulfill us as much as God, but Christians often overlook that some of the things we hope for turn out to be pretty darn awesome. Sure, a relationship left your heart broken, and those shoes didn’t make you as cool as you thought they would, but crossing the finish line at the state xc meet was just about the best feeling in the whole entire world. Things here on earth can be great, and that’s ok to think, but the glory of Heaven is 1000000000x greater!! Crossing the finish line may feel awesome, but nothing even imaginable compared to entering the gates of heaven.
In the song she says: “There is just one thing I need.” Whatever you are going through, whatever earthly desires are consuming your heart and mind, God is the one thing you need. I pray that all you want for Christmas is God, and remember that He is the only thing we need all year long.
I’m here to tell you, if your earthly desires have only been bringing you down, there is a greater hope in God alone. But on the other hand, if life is going great, give God the glory and praise him that life up in the sky is going to be UNBELIEVABLY better!
