In April we will travel to Thailand. Please enjoy some interesting facts about this country.

GREETINGS
Men and women greet using the “wai”. Hands are placed in prayer position and then touched to somewhere between the chest and top of head. It is accompanied by slight nod or bow. The higher the hands are raised, the higher respect.

COMMUNICATION STYLE
It depends on the level of relationship. If you know someone well be blunt. If not, be indirect.
PERSONAL SPACE AND TOUCHING
Like in Malaysia, they prefr standing at least arms lengths apart.
VIEWS OF TIME
They are relaxed. More emphasis on people, relational rather than set schedules and deadlines. They are usually 20-30 minutes late. An unannounced visit is okay and friends will stop whatever they are doing to chat.
GENDER ISSUES
They are very open in terms of respect for different genders/ sexual preferences. Women are seen as the giver of life. They hold powerful positions, however it is a bit chauvinistic. People avoid touching or sitting next to monks and entering certain areas.
GUESTURES
Take shoes off when entering Thai home, places of worship and some hotel rooms. Step over any and all thresholds. Beckon by extending arm and making a scratching motion with fingers. Always use right hand to pass and receive. Don’t beckon by pointing with index finger. Use chin or whole hand, palm flat.
TABOOS
Avoid touching or passing objects over top of anyone’s head. Don’t point toe or heel or any part of the foot at any person. Don’t show the sole of your foot or use the foot to move anything as it is the lowliest part of your body. Always use right hand to pass and receive. Don’t put feet up on table or furniture and don’t step over anyone sitting on the floor- go around.
