The day of launch we went searching for a Hospital and a Hostel.
A couple girls on our team felt like God was calling us toward a hospital for our 8 days before debrief and travel to Rwanda.
We got a ride farther into Kampala and found a couple hospitals, and then found our hostel.
We stayed at a very nice Hostel in Kampala. As soon as we arrived we hurried to set up our tents because we could see rain coming our way. Three of our girls went to get some groceries and decided to stop at a coffee and pizza shop to just check out the prices. They started talking to a man in line and he happened to be a doctor at a local hospital. To summarize he spoke with other doctors the next day and they allowed us to come volunteer our time.
Bethany Hospital for Women and Children is where we spent out time. The administration put us in places based on our jobs at home. One of my jobs back home is phlebotomy. So they put me in the lab. I was grateful for this because it was like a comfort zone for me.
It was pretty awesome to see how a lab is run in Africa compared to the States. It was surprisingly similar. I was able to see slides of malaria under a microscope. It was pretty neat!
That was just the first day. We also learned that day that every morning the workers meet 30 minutes before opening to do daily devotionals together. So then we were able to participate and share in the daily devotionals the next 2 days.
Our last day at the hospital we helped out in the canteen. Here we were able to learn to make African banana pancakes and Mandazi. Both were delicious!
In the 8 days our team was out we were able to encounter some really great people not only from the hospital but also from the hostel.
We are back together with the entire squad now and are leaving in just TWO DAYS for our next country, Rwanda!
