In a house with at least 14 girls, lice is bound to be a problem. It was week two of our month in Nicaragua when our team leader came down with the nasty little white pests, and one by one the rest of us we also overtaken. Lice checks became a regular part of the schedule. Hair cuts were threatened. Tears erupted. Lice combs laid on every counter.

Okay, it really wasn’t that big of a deal. Only two people from our team got lice, and one was basically just lice eggs. The girls living here did get lice, and haircuts were threatened, but nothing actually happened- just a few tears from the younger ones!

This month was SO GOOD for team bonding, especially since we were able to be away from the rest of the squad and just hang out as a group of 7. We might be quirkier and have lots of little inside jokes deal with it. Overall, Nicaragua was fantastic and way too fast. Here are some highlights:

11 Nicaraguan Memories

  1. “Can you pass me the syrup?” “Sure! There are ants in it, but just stop it before they come out! I used it!”
  2. I used to flush toilet paper?
  3. Bug in my coffee? No problem! Just pick it out and keep drinking! Coffee is coffee, bugs or not!
  4. “I’ve only worn this shirt for two days in a row and worked out in it once, so I think it’s still pretty clean!”
  5. Nothing brings out the flavor in plain Corn Flakes like drinkable apple yogurt.
  6. Some people really do like beans and rice every day.
  7. Busses aren’t full unless you’re sitting in someone’s lap and your head is in someone’s armpit.
  8. “I don’t have lice, I just have lice eggs!”
  9. It’s a good day in Nicaragua when we only use half a gallon of vegetable oil for one meal.
  10. Who needs a swim suit when you can jump in with pajama shorts and a tank top?
  11. No rules, just right. 🙂

Other memories include peanut butter, more ants, swarms of flies, loud Spanish worship music, a broken sink (and flooded house), a toddler that smelled like pee and perfume, and huevos rancheros.
