Every Friday, the 6th graders I am working with write a blog. Today I decided I wanted to join them in sharing what I am thankful for during this season of preparation for the World Race.
1. My Supporters
This week I have been blown away by the generosity of my co-workers, friends, and family. Not only are you supporting me financially, but also through prayer, words of encouragement, and by showing up to my events.
Recently I have experienced fear creeping into my mind around fundraising. Worried about meeting goals and worried that it is too much. When I take a step back and stop my thoughts from staying on this circuit of fear I see how abundantly generous my community is towards me.
On Tuesday, past and present co-workers blew me away with their support at Smithfields. Simply their presence was hugely encouraging. I learned again that I am deeply cared for by this sweet community.
Last weekend, Allysha Lilley, donated her time and talent to help me get some photos I could use for thank you cards and flyers. Again, I am simply in awe of the generosity of my supporters and humbled by the various ways friends and family are supporting me in this journey.
Today I looked at my fundraising summary for November and in 15 days over $2,000 of donations have been processed!! WOW!! I truly can’t believe it!
2. Learning to sit in silence
Noise is all around us. The billboards we see as we drive on the interstate. The constant rumble of people talking around us at work or at school. Television shows and movies. Music on the radio. Podcasts we listen to while taking a walk.
Sitting in silence isn’t altogether natural for me; but it is a discipline I am developing a fondness for these days. In the silence I have time to let my brain rest, to listen to the natural noise around me: the birds, the crickets, the neighbors dogs, cars coming and going on the gravel driveway, etc. I have come to realize I need this time to foster inner peace.
3. My brother, John-Paul
At my cousin Robert’s wedding in September his sister McCullough talked about what a unique experience it is to live with your siblings as adults. I completely agree. I love living with John-Paul. He always has funny videos to share, is quick to listen, keeps me active by asking me to join him for a walk around the neighborhood, and inspires me with his own passion to work to better the world around us.
Before leaving for Training Camp I shared with him that I was nervous about making new friends. Worried about being liked and knowing how to start good conversations. (Funny, right?) As I drove to Gainesville, GA I got a sweet message from him encouraging me that, “Everyone is worried about being interesting, BE INTERESTED and friendships will flow.” He told me he was just a phone call or a text away and that he was excited to hear about all the friends and memories I made when I came home.
I will miss him a lot next year.
The list goes on. 🙂
Thanks for reading!
