Month 4: Vietnam. This is the country I’m probably most excited about visiting. Pretty much every country I haven’t been to is on my list, but this one is towards the top..if not at the very top. Something about the Asian culture is exciting and intriguing to me.

My team and I will be leaving Dobromirka, Bulgaria (where we’ve been serving) on Nov. 7 to head to Sofia. We’ll be there for two nights and then on November 9th, we start our journey to Vietnam! We have a 2ish hour layover in Moscow, Russia and then we’ll land in Ho Chi Minh City on Nov. 10th. It’s crazy we’re already done with Europe and heading on to Asia already.

For month 4, Team Submerge will be in Da Nang, Vietnam. We’re partnering with two local ministries. One is a pizza shop (it’s used to employ the deaf community and to help fund the ministry work) and the other is English clubs for the local church and the local university students. We’re not 100% sure what exactly our month will look like, but we do know we’ll be helping, in some way, with a musical…that 3,000 people come to see. How cool is that?! I’ll keep you updated on what ministry will look like once we know.

I am so, so, SO excited for this month. Like I said Vietnam and Asia in general are the reason I picked this specific route, so I am SO EXCITED to see what this month has in store for me.

 VIETNAM

After nearly a century of French rule, Vietnam split into the communist (north) and non-communist (south) in the 1950s. Conflict between the two sides led to the Vietnam War. However, by 1975, Vietnam was restored as a completely communist country.

Even with the economic reforms and restoration of diplomatic ties, human rights are limited in Vietnam—especially freedom of religion.

Over 80% of Vietnamese don’t claim any religion, and about 8% are Buddhist.

Vietnam’s story is one of searching and fighting for freedom.

FUN FACTS!

Currency: Vietnamese Dong

Language: Vietnamese

Religion: 82% none, 8% Buddhist, 7% Roman Catholic, 3% other

CULTURE!

Although anti-U.S. sentiment was once very strong in Vietnam in the years following the end of the War, modern-day Vietnam is much more tolerant and accepting of U.S. cultural influence. Travelers from the U.S. typically find that locals are very hospitable.

The Vietnamese do not wear shorts in public except when at the beach or at a work site. Foreigners are advised to do the same, especially when visiting more rural areas.

 Da Nang!

Da Nang is the 4th largest city in Vietnam, located on the east coast of the South China Sea at the mouth of the Han River. It is one of Vietnam’s most important port cities.

Now, here are a few pictures from Google Images.
