Bulgaria is where I’ll be for the month of October – month 3 of the race!

Team Submerge is currently serving with Mission Possible in Dobromirka, Bulgaria. Dobromirka is a village of 600 or so people about 2 1/2 hours from Sofia.

We are working at the Mission Possible conference center helping our two hosts, Emi and Val, host a total of three conferences. That means, we help to cook, bake, clean bathrooms, clean rooms, make beds, wash sheets, take out trash, find and crack walnuts, and so much more!

We are currently on the back end of the first conference, a 9 day women’s conference. It has been awesome to serve these women and to build relationships with them over the last week. We then have two more 3 day conferences – don’t worry, we have little breaks in between them! 🙂

This month has been so peaceful and completely filled with joy. This month was much needed by me!

BULGARIA

Formerly part of the Eastern Bloc, Bulgaria remained under communism until 1990. Today this democratic nation is part of the European Union.

The sixth country to put an astronaut in space, Bulgaria has the second highest number of Mensa members in the world. It is also a primary source, transit, and destination point for human trafficking in Eastern Europe.

The people of Bulgaria are some of the most intelligent in the world. They hunger for more, yet many do not realize everything they seek can be found in Jesus Christ.’

FUN FACTS!

Currency: Bulgarian Lev

Language: Bulgarian

Religion: 59% Eastern Orthodox, 27% unspecified, 9% muslim, 5% other/none

CULTURE!

Shaking the head side-to-side means “yes” and one or two quick up and down nods mean “no.”

Bulgarian society is very formal. Only friends and family address each other by first names and possibly a hug or kiss.

When entering churches whether for prayer or sightseeing, women should wear skirts or dresses that fall below the knee. They should also keep shoulders covered.

Men usually wait for a woman to initiate a handshake. Some elderly men may kiss a woman’s hand. When introduced to someone, men stand, but women may keep their seat.
