Matthew 9:16-18

English Standard Version (ESV)

16 No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch tears away from the garment, and a worse tear is made. 17 Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.”

Right now I wanted to call my prayer partners into action.  I have found lately that praying over specific verses in the bible, and praying those verses over yourself is very powerful.

And at the moment, I need that Prayer.  I am currently in “old wineskin mode” and this is not going to work at all.  You see, God is preparing a new thing for me (new wine).  And I am functioning in the expectation of it coming in an old way (old wineskin).  I am an experiential learner, so it is easy to see how I can expect new things to happen the way things have always happened.

But what I gather from the above verses is that the new thing will be lost, and the one trying to receive it in the old way will get hurt.  None of us want that.  Soooo…here is my prayer and I ask that you pray for me as well:

Please Lord give me a new mind to recognize and receive the new thing you have prepared for me.  Give me the wisdom to be a new wineskin and the mindset to see things the way you see them.

Please Lord give me a new heart to pursue the new thing you will set before me.  Do not let me shy away from it because of selfishness and do not let me miss it because of my own stubborness in expecting things in the old way.

And Please Lord give me new hands, to carry out the new thing you are bringing in your time and in your way.  Steady them, give them power, and let them be your hands.

Amen!
