Happy November all! Internet may be a little easier to get this month but lets keep our fingers crossed. We may end up outside city center and then I won’t have a clue. But…and update.
After leaving YWAM Lima to catch an overnight bus, we found ourselves on our own as far as travel goes. We drew on our Halloween costumes with eye liner and trick-or-treated at the bus station while we waited. The kids loved it since we gave them candy and all. As for the bus ride, I still have no idea why we were given tequila soaked cotton balls by the bus attendants, but after using mine like a face cleaner/astringent I discovered the locals putting them in their ears. I already couldn’t stand the potent smell my face was making so I chose to place the cotton in the garbage over my ears.
We arrived at about 8:30 in the morning to the church here in Haunuco and found that we weren’t actually expected until Monday. Turns out that they are having a regional youth conference at the church until midday Sunday, so until then our job is to sleep, eat, and converse with the youth here. Their focus on this retreat is on building relationships so I am glad to help them practice. I sat through a session on being a good listener, and then I accidently slept through parts of the next session. Without a translator I found it is much easier to zone out…so I don’t fault myself for this one, it was a long bus ride.
I find myself energized a bit by seeing these youth worshiping (loud and proud), and getting to join them in crazy dancing, goofy competitions, and even talent show. I do feel blessed and honored to have made some friends here. After the kiddos leave I have been told we will be moved to another living space. Most likely an apartment or house where we can cook our meals as a team and possibly sleep on beds for a month…but I will let you know as soon as I do. This little city of Haunuco is a welcome change from the Jungle, that is for sure.
This month is also National Write Your Novel Month and my team says that as long as we all write 3 pages a day we can each meet the requirement. Each one of us plan to have completed a novel by the end of the month…and mailed it in so we can get our certificate. BUT, after only writing half a page yesterday of my awkwardly written sci-fi comedy, this may be harder than I though. I will keep at it though for a little while and see what happens. Wish me luck!
