We have been preparing a field for pumpkin planting this month in Thailand. We have listened to lots of music over the course of the month. For some reason, I kept replaying the National Anthem in my head. As cliche as it sounds, I think the Lord had me meditating on “Land of the Free and Home of the Brave.” It’s one of the most iconic verses belted out time and time again at public events across the nation.
American citizens consider the United States to be the LAND OF THE FREE AND HOME OF THE BRAVE. Y’all, we sure aren’t acting like it.
I know Coronavirus is widespread, frightening and confusing. But, as an American who is living outside of America currently, I’m pretty disappointed in my people. Not because we are taking necessary precautions, but because we are letting the media frenzy steal our freedom, our bravery AND our joy.
One of my favorite Christian song lyrics says, “I’m no longer a slave to fear. I am a child of God.”
Americans are not acting like they live in the home of the free. From an outsider’s perspective, it seems to be the exact opposite.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7
As Christ followers, we are not called to live in fear. We can’t let the unknown paralyze us.
Can we agree to cut the crap and persevere?
Can we ignore what the media portrays and instead rely on facts?
Can we support and encourage those making hard decisions?
Can we show people Christ in the midst of global chaos?
Can we quit stocking up on toilet paper and move on with our lives?
GEEZ LOUISE.
“Be strong and Courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”
WHEREVER YOU GO! (Obviously with caution and discernment…) He’ll be with you at the store, at a concert, at your sporting event, at work, at home and everywhere else! (At this point, He’ll be with you sitting in your living room because the whole country is fear-stricken and cancel-happy on all accounts.)
Forgive me for the rant. I ultimately want to remind and encourage any believers reading this to stick to your guns and pray hard. THEN PRAY HARDER. Let’s ban together and represent America as home of the free (In Christ) and land of the brave (In Christ).
(On a more logistical note, here is a brief update from abroad: I am still in Southeast Asia. We are supposed to fly out of Bangkok, Thailand to Quito, Ecuador March 21. Our last three South American months will to be spent in Ecuador, Peru, Chile and Argentina. As of now, the travel plans still remain. Several X-Squad parents were supposed to meet us in Quito for “Parent Vision Trip,” a week-long mission opportunity. The event was recently canceled and my dad will not be making his way to South America any time soon. Everyone is healthy and life is proceeding “as normal” for our squad. As travel bans, quarantine regulations and health screening requirements continue to change, so will our travel plans. Please pray for continued safety, health and PEACE!)
Much Love,
Carley
