Part of the whole new team thing is coming up with a new
team name.  Normally I wouldn’t make a
big deal about this and definitely wouldn’t deem it “blog-worthy,” but I like
this one, so I’ll share…

Our new name is “current.”
As is true of most group decisions, this did not come quickly or easily,
but the process is good and the result is better.  It started with Kathryn sharing something she
had read about committing to the Lord.  She cited specifically Psalm 37:4-5, where she
had been reading about the literal translation for commit being to “roll away with” or “roll together” with
God and his will.

Psalm
37:4-5
“Delight
yourself in the Lord;
And
He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit
your way to the Lord,
Trust
also in Him, and He will do it.”

She explained a mental
picture she had gotten about how committing to follow God is like stepping into
a giant tire and being pushed down a hill.
It’s sometimes scary, sometimes dangerous, and sometimes you go over a
few bumps, but in the end, you’re going where God wants you to and your path is
completely out of control – or at least your control.

We discussed this concept and the rolling aspect,
brainstormed, and got to water and tides.
God has been using the analogy of water a lot lately to describe himself
(maybe I’ll explain in a later blog) but I was intrigued, so I played
along.  Eventually we got to the currents
and the ebb and flow of water in motion.
To me, this is a perfect description of this year.  We can either row on our own, steer our own
course, set sail for wherever we think is best, or we can go with the flow, we
can roll with it, letting the current guide us.

I kind of see myself, and our team, as a
boat.  We’re on a journey together.  Sometimes the water is smooth, sometimes it’s
rough.  Sometimes it’s fun, sometimes
scary, and a lot of the time I have no idea what I’m doing.  But in the end I’m not in control – I’m just committed.
