Goodbye Kenya!
I’ve bid my farewells to Kenya… and now I’m in Uganda.
First, our contacts in Kenya were great, they are super caring people and warmly welcomed us as family!
Some random info about our time in Kenya:
Eats: chapoti, beef or bean stew, kale/spinach, ugali, rice, guacamole, bean/maiz (corn) mixture and sort of like a warm coleslaw were what our cooks often made for us – yum.
Getting around: we often crammed into Pastor Joseph’s car or rode the matotus (a van but public transport) which always proved to be an entertaining experience.
Where: We were in the outskirts of Nairobi, about the biggest city in Eastern Africa, and were about 15km away from Kabira, about the biggest slum in Eastern Africa.
Money: We used Kenyan shillings and the exchange is 1USD = 80 shilings.
Culture/Language: There are 42 tribes in Kenya. The Masai people wear red plaid clothes – almost like Burburry… hahaha. No, no you fashionistas, not quite. Swahili and English are most commonly spoken. We went to a cultural centre and watched some crazy, amazing dances! Super fun!! They called me up from the audience and I had to sit on this little chair while the men danced around me and I got to eat French fries – yum! Then they of course told me that now I am a wife! Haha. I also tried to make friends with a wart hog! And little random fact… Obama is from one of the Kenyan tribes.
I loved being able to go into Kenyan schools and tell stories and inspire the little ones of Kenya! I loved being a part of the worship team and singing and dancing with our Kenyan family at church! Haha… this warrants big laughs for sure! Me dancing with the Africans at the front of the church… and doing their shoulder shimmy shakes with the choir!!!
My African name is now – Wathayu – which means the one who brings peace.
I love Kenya.
