I'm learning to ask God who he wants me to be each day and each month in an effort to really live the race He has set out for me. This month of unsung heroes has really opened my eyes to the beauty and perseverance that is cultivated when you understand what the Lord has for you and you walk in it. Trusting God to equip you and provide for whatever comes next is a muscle that needs to be exercised regularly.
I saw this lived out in such a true way when I met Susu. My teammate Katie shared about Susu in the last post. Her story beautifully embodies an Unsung Hero.
Susu isn’t looking for financial support (although she’d welcome it!) and she isn’t looking for fame or recognition. She is just being obedient to the God who is ordering her path and providing for her every step of the way.
The day I met Susu was one of the best of my race, nothing out of this world happened but God was so intricately intertwined in every detail that I could do nothing else but rejoice. I’m usually an internal processor but this day was so full of grace and divinity that I was bursting to tell anyone who would listen!
I should have known big things were in store for the day but really all I knew was I needed to go to the Russian Market that afternoon. Not later in the week. Not maybe if we can get there before we leave Phnom Penh. It had to be Monday afternoon.
In hindsight, I know it’s because God wanted my schedule to be free to meet Susu. That was going to be our only chance to get together because she was headed out to the province the next day and would not return until after my team had departed from Phnom Penh.
The love Susu has for the Kuy people (an unreached people group in the villages of Cambodia) she ministers to embodies the love God has for each of His children. She longs to see them grow and learn about Jesus. She longs to see them rise up as leaders in their own communities and live out the gospel of hope and love in a society that is so desperate for both of these things.
I am so thrilled to be able to share Susu’s story with you but that’s not why God brought me there that day. He brought me there to listen and to encourage Susu. In a country with few Christians coupled with the travel involved to sustain her ministry, building community is difficult. Throughout our entire conversation she kept repeating how encouraged she was to meet with us. How nice it was to just sit and talk with other Christians.
God wanted me at the Russian market that Monday. He wanted to encourage Susu as his faithful servant. He wanted to show her He is still providing for the dreams He puts in her heart. And God wanted to show me the love and sacrifice of a faithful woman whose only goal is to go where God wants her, love the people He loves and serve where He is moving.
This will be a day on my race I will look to for encouragement later down the road. This really was one of the best days.
And the day doesn’t have to end here. You can help, part of Susu's ministry in the rubbish dumps is to provide clothes to the people who live there. She is always in need of more supplies.
Friends back home, as your kids get ready to go back to school or you are cleaning out your closets to make space for new fall clothes, are there items you could send to Cambodia?
She works mostly with children and young adults so kids clothes and adult sizes small and medium (anything larger is just too big for small Cambodian frames.) I would love to pass along the P.O. Box number clothes can be sent to. Comment below or contact me through the blog or email ([email protected]).
Please know that any donations will only serve to encourage Susu more and build her up in the ministry to which God has called her.
