A year ago my life looked very different. Friends and family would vouch for that. I was a high school social worker living in Chicago with friends. I was living the typical American life, working a 40 hour, 5 day a week job. Business attire. I was spending my weekends at the bars, watching sports games, and eating out. If God was lucky He made the top ten on my priority list if I’m being truly honest. Friends, work, fun, running, social life, partying, and more took precedent.
Fast-forward a year. I’m sitting at a Saudi Arabia airport during our layover before we fly into Manila in the Philippines for Month Four of The World Race. My world now revolves around Jesus, ministry, prayer, worship, community, and people. My wardrobe consists of reused t-shirts stained with paint, keen sandals, and worn down athletic shorts and leggings. I jumped when I saw that the airport had Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks AND Burger King.
Giving my life back to God has not always been the easiest transition. It’s like putting on a new pair running shoes. You have to walk in them before you run. You have to break them in. Sometimes it’s painful. You get blisters. It’s also a different pair of shoes that I’ve never worn before. Picture me walking in heels, and you’ll get a funny visual of how I looked starting out on The World Race.
But that’s where God comes in. He knows what He’s doing, and He’s with me every step of the way. And as I shed each layer of my old skin and become more comfortable in the new He is more able to work through me.
