Chikungunya Fever. Rubble Roads. Wipeouts. Bucket problems. Rare electricity. Goats. Spirit-filled Haitian worship. Dogs howling all night. Hammock life. Rice, Beans, and Plantains. Prayer Walks. Gun shots. Hallelujahs. Soccer Ministry. Sunrises and sunsets. Creole. Getting schooled by Haitian kids in soccer. Spicy coleslaw aka picklies. Off days at a hotel. Sweat soaked clothes. Hand washing. Flooded tents. Mango season. Tap tap rides. Blaring horns. Evacuation.
People are always asking about big things I’ve seen on the Race. God showing up and crazy miracles happening. I have to say that most of the time days are pretty normal, World Race normal at least. I’ve learned that God shows up all the time, but most of the time they are small beautiful moments that you have to look for and hold in your heart. Its all about perspective. As the great Ferris Bueller quoted:
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while you might miss it”.
Here are some God moments from Haiti:
– Ana, Shelley, Aimee, and I stopped during the beginning of our prayer walk to help a woman Janine and her son Edison. She was carrying a big bag up the hill while helping her son walk who we learned has had leg problems for a long time. We carried the bag for her and then carried Edison the rest of the way to their home as well. While carrying him, Shelley tripped and fell, but fell sacrificing her body to make sure he didn’t get hurt in the fall. Once in the house we prayed over his legs and his family before saying goodbye.
-On one of our walks to pray for people in the community we had been waiting for the last group to return at someone’s house. A woman walked up to us and asked us for prayer for stomach pain she had for years. We prayed over her twice, and sang worship songs. She told us she felt the pain leaving her body as we were praying and after she accepted Christ!
-On another prayer walk we jut finished talking and praying with a Christian man who owned a business. A man came up and said e wanted prayer for his faith. He had practiced voo doo but recently he had a vision a missionaries telling him to come with him so he accepted Christ!
-Watching my sisters pour their water into kids mouths
-One of the boys in the community, Cliff, helping me carry a water jug down the hill
-A girl brushing the dirt off me after I wiped out on the soccer field
-worshipping on the rooftop overlooking the ocean
-Little kids dancing and playing the drum at church
-The Haitian church covering us in prayer before we left
-waking up each morning to the sunrise coming over the mountain and casting rays that shimmered over the ocean
-Holding a sick child in my arms at the orphanage while Paige washed the directors feet
-kids fist pumping in celebration after each goal
