It’s been a week since I’ve left home and while some days it seems like so long ago in other ways it seems like just yesterday I was home with my family showering when I wanted, watching criminal minds, talking to friends whenever I want. But that isn’t the case anymore. I wake up around 5am and walk to the roof of the house I’m staying in and I’m surrounded by one of the most amazing views I’ve ever seen. Mountains on every side of me, the most green I’ve ever seen, and women working in the rice fields day in and day out.
We begin our mornings by walking into villages for about 30-45 minutes to houses where we meet with the few Christians that live here And do this throughout the day, visiting other houses where we fellowship with believers here. The passion these people have for Christ is amazing and I am always in awe of their obvious and bold love for our Savior.
These hills that we walk up are in no shape the most enjoyable walks and the first few days I was beginning to ask myself what I had gotten myself into. But every time we made it to the top the views were so beautiful and breathtaking. And the people we get to worship with at the end of our walks make it all worth while.
Im beginning to enjoy the walks now and the people I meet as I’m on them. They’ve become–not easier–but instead of thinking of how hard it is, I try to find joy in the little things. Like the sweet women I get to say Nameste to or the children who come up to us and laugh and ask us our names and it’s not so bad.
These walks up the hills and mountains have made realize how similar it is to our lives. We all want to be at the top of the mountain because it’s all worth it there and it’s beautiful there but God wants us to learn something on the way there too. And what makes it all worth it at the top is that you started from the bottom.
I pray wherever you are in your journey, whether it’s at the top of the mountain, the bottom of it, or on your way up that you’ll find joy in it–even when it’s hard and remember that Jesus is with you every step of the way.
Im learning so much here in Nepal about what it looks like when Christ is your only hope and how he should always be the first one we turn to. God couldn’t have blessed me more with an amazing first month and I am excited to see how He uses the rest of our time here.
