~ Hola from Chile!! ~
This month my team is in Santiago, Chile. We are in a county of Santiago called La Pintana. We are working with a ministry called Vision for Children. House of Hope is a part of Vision for Children that works with orphanages down the street to house girls after they age out of the orphanage. Similar to the U.S, once a child ages out of the foster care system at 18, they often do not have the same resources that they did before while they were in the system and can feel displaced. Once the children age out of the orphanage they often are left without basic skills and with no where to go. So the House of Hope and Vision for Children gives the girls a place to live. Originally they were only were taking girls who were eighteen, but have started taking girls as young as 16. While living here they are taught how to cook, clean, and budget money. They are all expected to complete chores everyday, are given their own bedroom, and are held to high expectations. Vison for Children also has “community day” on Wednesday, which is worship and a service for the kids in the area. It could be compared to youth group in the U.S. The girls who live here go to community, plus kids from the surrounding neighborhoods, along with kids from the orphanages down the street. On Saturday’s they have classes for all of the kids in the area to come to. Some of the activities include, math, drums, guitar, English, crafts, ping pong, and futbol. After the classes are over they have a devotional and worship. They end their time off with lunch. These are just some of the ways in which Vision for Children is making a difference in this area of Chile and investing in the Children’s lives.
It has only been a short week since we have been here, but our time has already been AMAZING!!!!! This ministry is giving everything they can to help these girls. Most of them come from really rough backgrounds. Many have been abused, some do not know their parents, others were living on the street. Our job here is to hangout with the girls, be a good influence, and hopefully let them see Jesus through us. While we are here we are also working with a special needs school down the street during the day. At the school, we help the teachers with activities and help maintain the classroom. The kids at the school are absolutely adorable and have filled our hearts with so much joy!!
This place is beautiful!! The area where we are in is a rough and poor area of Santiago, but the beautiful Andes mountains surround the city. God’s glory is literally staring down from the mountains!!! Pray that their eyes would see! These people are beautiful. They are very loving and open to conversation. Pray that the conversation would Glorify God and that He would open doors for us to talk about Him and that we would be brave in doing so. This Ministry is so Awesome. They are empowering these girls and the surrounding community and pointing people to Jesus. Pray for the work that they are already doing. Pray for my team as we partner with them. Pray that the girls that live in the House of Hope will come to know Jesus and further their relationship with Him. There is often a language barrier since most of the people speak Spanish here and our Spanish is very broken and doesn’t get us very far. Although this can sometimes be frustrating, its not stopping us from speaking to people. It is also very cool to see how even when we can not understand each other completely, if we are consistent and bold and still approach people the Lord WILL speak through the language barrier. Pray that people would see Jesus through our actions and the way we love them when words can not be understood. Also pray for the people of this community and in the area. That in everything we do we are being intentional, listening to the Holy Spirit’s prompting voice, and are able to bring Kingdom here in La Pintana!!!!
Fun Fact: We have bread with EVERY meal!!! And that’s totally okay because its soooo good!! Also hot tea has become a staple and yesterday I had a churro on the street and it was da bomb!!
xoxo love ya
