Earlier this month our squad went on an adventure to Lake Atitlán. The lake is surrounded by three different volcanoes. My team, minus Rachael plus Oriolyne, decided to take a private boat tour around the lake. We stopped at three different tourist cities throughout our tour. Each city had its own unique style. Our first stop after we departed Panajachel was San Marcos. San Marcos was very hippie with plenty of organic products. While in San Marcos we watched an Independence Day parade put on by the local schools. Next we visited San Juan which specialized in textiles and paintings. Next we went to the bigger tourist town of Santiago. As we wandered through the town we discovered four coffee shops on the same block. We also discovered a huge street market that pretty quickly turned into one of our scenarios at training camp. It was early afternoon when we headed back, by now all the tops of the volcanoes were covered by the clouds and we couldn’t see the opposite shore. The lake was also very choppy, our tour guide told us to sit in the back of the boat. As we cruised across the lake, our little boat rocked back and forth with the waves and all I could think about was Jesus calming the Sea of Galilee.

Our boat was probably the same size as one of disciple’s fishing boats. We were traveling to several different cities around the lake. On our return trip we crossed to the other side. The waves were big, but at least they weren’t coming into the boat. The Sea of Galilee is 64 mi2 and Lake Atitlán is 50 mi2, there are roughly the same size (The Sea of Galilee is 22% bigger.) I felt like I was a part of Jesus’ miracle.

“One day he got into a boat with his disciples, and he said to them, ‘Let us go across to the other side of the lake.’ So they set out, and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. And they went and woke him, saying, ‘Master, Master, we are perishing!’ And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. He said to them, ‘Where is your faith?’ And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, ‘Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?’”

—Luke 8:22-25

Jesus rebuked the wind and the waves and they stopped. His voice had power over nature! He commanded them to cease and they obeyed Him. Over and over this month I have been reminded of the power that WE have in the Spirit.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

—Acts 1:8

POWER. We are surrounded by power.  We saw the power of the waves. We felt the power of an earthquake. We see and hear the power of volcanoes. And we see and hear the POWER of the Holy Spirit. There is POWER in the name of Jesus Christ!

“But Peter said, ‘I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!’ And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.”

—Acts 3:6-8
