This past month has been about so many things for me; breaking away from fears, breaking away from selfishness, breaking away from expectations. The Lord has broken my heart so many times this past month, I’m not even sure where to begin sharing with you about my experience in Honduras. I know I won’t be able to put all of my experiences into words, so here is a brief summary of Honduras.
Our Ministry
Three days a week we rode to Los Pinos, a community just outside of Tesgutagalpa. We worked at a school which a woman named Professor Angela ran from her house. She had one room, 15 feet by 30 feet, which she had filled with desks and a small whiteboard at the front of the classroom. Each day we came in with a new lesson for the children; we taught them words, phrases and songs, and played games with them. They picked the language up with such eager spirits. Each day seeing their desire to learn English, my desire to learn Spanish grew more and more. I regretted every Spanish class I just barely made it through because I had to. It was hard to leave these children, to walk away and realize that I will most likely never see them again. But I know the Lord has them in His hands; I know He will continue to protect them and seek their hearts.
Our Contact
Tony. There are so many amazing things I could say about Tony, but I feel as though I will just share a few of the things he is doing around Tegustagalpa. First off, Tony allowed our entire squad (all 54 of us) to stay at his house/ministry sight for the entire month, not to mention his wife, Nidia, cooked for us the entire month! Now for a little of their ministry, Tony and Nidia focus on building relationships with the children and families in Los Pinos, and other communities surrounding Tegustagalpa. They have taken in several children off the streets, and offered them a place to stay, food, and schooling. In the time we were there they had anywhere from 5 to 10 kids living in their house! Their strong hearts for these children amazed me daily, as they allowed us to experience their struggles alongside them for the month. It is so rare to come across people with such huge hearts for not only children, but also for the Lord. The constant love I saw Tony and Nidia give could only be from the Lord.
Me
This month was huge for me. I experienced simple, but important, things such as; typical Honduran food, how to go days without showering, conversations with people on the squad I didn’t know. I also experienced growth through hard times and moments of doubt, where I began to slowly put more trust in the Lord.
I’m sorry for the briefness of this blog. I hope it gives you a little insight into our month in Honduras.
Love, Caitlyn
