Breast cancer and wild flowers.
One can be described as something painful, discouraging, and heartbreaking.
The other, something beautiful, often a symbol of life, and gentle.
Last week, the girls and our team went to pray over the land where an outreach camp would be happening the following week. After we spent some time praying in both English and Khmer, we began to walk the streets inviting children to this camp as well as offering prayer.
Off we went, house to house. One house we went to had a garden full of beautiful flowers. Now, if you knew these girls, you would know they are all about wild flowers. They pick them and put them in our hair on the daily. So there the girls went, picking their fresh bouquet to hold on to.
We greeted another 5 homes until we reached one in particular. Our host asked if there was anything that these two sisters needed prayer for. One sister began to cry. She explained that her sister was in so much pain. That she had breast cancer and wasn’t doing well. She felt so discouraged and heartbroken over the pain her sister was experiencing. We prayed for her and she wept. Her sister sat across from us and watched as we prayed.
Once amens were echoed, we asked if we could pray for the sister. She lifted up her shirt to reveal the area where the cancer was. These girls stood there. They didn’t run away from the uncomfortable pain and sad sight. They didn’t giggle because of the wound was ‘gross’. They stood and prayed. Some even cried with this woman because of the compassion in their hearts. We prayed for healing and comfort. During prayer, I opened my eyes to find VoLeak, a girl around 11 years old whom had come to kneel by this woman and lay her hands on her. She didn’t know her, nor was she told to do this. Once we said amen and wiped our tears, my eyes witnessed the most selfless act of compassion. One by one, these girls took their freshly picked flowers and handed it to this woman in pain. The compassion in their heart for a stranger is what I hope to have some day. They gave up their prize flowers that they loved from that day and graciously gave it away for the sake of someone else.
* This morning we found out that this sweet woman passed away. Please lift up her family in prayer. *
