My month working in a refugee camp is coming to a close, so I made a little list giving a small taste of what it’s been like.  I wish I could share more but it’s a military camp so we are not allowed to share details or pictures. But this is a pretty good summary of this month.  It’s been quite an experience and I am so thankful I was given this opportunity. So here are 45 things I found myself doing this month while working in a a refugee camp in Lesvos, Greece.


 

  1. Walking up a hill multiple times a day
  2. Holding little kids’ hands
  3. Having your cheeks be pinched
  4. Handing out hundreds of meals
  5. Crying
  6. Witnessing fights and riots
  7. Being offered lots of food and tea
  8. Experiencing cultures from around the world
  9. Learning phrases in Arabic, Farsi, and French
  10. Being yelled at
  11. Hearing how America is “good”
  12. Hearing how Trump is “no good”
  13. Being proposed to
  14. Being the object of someone’s frustration
  15. Being bitten by a child
  16. Putting pallets under tents because of the rain
  17. Bringing a family of five into a tent already filled with 10 people
  18. Being appreciated
  19. Teaching people English grammar
  20. Attempting to learn Arabic
  21. Seeing the world from a completely different perspective
  22. Sharing the Gospel with Muslims
  23. Slipping and falling on the hill from #1
  24. Advocating for people and their families
  25. Wrapping a sprained ankle
  26. Experiencing a whole new level of exhaustion
  27. Watching children slide down a hill on a dumpster lid (and being terrified for them)
  28. Asking kids where their adults are
  29. Telling people “no”
  30. Making hundreds of copies (and then running out of paper and ink)
  31. Playing volleyball
  32. Guarding a gate for 8 hours straight
  33. Opening said gate hundreds of times during those 8 hours
  34. Hearing “Hello friend!”
  35. Experiencing your heart being broken and made full all at the same time
  36. Setting up tents
  37. Asking people for their papers
  38. Being freezing during overnight shifts
  39. Having the most interesting conversations with people
  40. Smelling the most “interesting” smells
  41. Playing with very adorable dogs and cats
  42. Seeing how broken the world truly is
  43. Seeing hope in the brokenness
  44. Trying to make people smile
  45. Finding God in the smallest of circumstances and experiences
