Have you ever just sat with someone without saying a word? Maybe it was by choice or maybe you just didn’t know what to say?
Whelp, today that happened to me. I just sat. I sat on the front porch of a small village church in India with an older lady. We didn’t say a word to each other. (The language barrier is a real struggle). We exchanged a smile occasionally and a little head nod, here and there… but nothing was said. No profound truth was spoken. No questions were asked. We just sat. And somehow I walked away from that time together, full.
Silence can be a daunting thing. 9 times out of 10 it can be super awkward. But what if we started to embrace the silence. Embracing the moments where all you hear is the crickets chirping (and if you are in India, maybe tuk-tuks zooming by)… knowing you don’t have to say anything.
What if we approached God that way? What if we came into His presence expecting silence? I believe God wants those moments with His children. He is eager for us to enjoy the quietness that alone is found in His presence. Moments where we just sit with our Papa. With no words. With no agenda. Just sitting, soaking up the silence.
When I was on the porch, God was gently speaking to me saying: “Sweet child, do this with Me! Come sit with me awhile. Pull up a chair. Grab a cup of coffee. Just be in My presence. You don’t always have to come with a list of things to chat about. I just want to be with you. There is beauty in the silence, I promise. Come taste and see.”
Gosh dang I need to work harder at coming to my Papa with no agenda. To just wait at His feet. Thankful I serve a patient God who extends much needed grace on this heart.
Father, may I be still and know that You are God! (Psalms 46:10)
