I can't believe that our month in El Salvador is drawing to a close. So much has happened since we got here that it seems like a blur. Looking back this month has been defined by many moment where I sit back and think, "I can't believe this is my life!" Here is a journey through many of those moment that were heartbreaking, crazy, and just straight up hilarious.
THE MOMENT WHEN…you ask your hostess if she is a man instead of asking if she is hungery (hombre vs. hambre) or you tell someone you will see them on eggs instead of Thursday (Jueves vs. huevos).
THE MOMENT WHEN…the pastor asks you a few hours before church starts if you would preach the sermon. You are so nervous you want to throw up, but a man gives his life to Jesus because God spoke through you.
THE MOMENT WHEN…you realize that there is an iguana loose in the house that could, in fact, be anywhere and when you find it under the couch, the pastor eats it for dinner.
THE MOMENT WHEN…you are told that you will be doing dramas and songs for children's ministries from 9:00 to 11:00 and by that they mean you will be giving your testimony at a conference for youth against violence from 10:30 until whenever they feel like taking you home.
THE MOMENT WHEN…you are the 16th person in the back of a pickup truck when the radiator blows and the truck starts rolling down the hill backwards.
THE MOMENT WHEN…a little girl reaches up her arms to you to be held and won't let go.
THE MOMENT WHEN…you realize that the church service will last 9 hours and you cannot understand a word.
THE MOMENT WHEN….the pastor drives you 45 minutes into San Salvador to take you to Wendy's and Starbucks so that you won't be homesick.
THE MOMENT WHEN…you are handed a picture printed out on a computer and asked to turn it into a 10 foot mural on the front of the church building.
THE MOMENT WHEN… your Dona Wafle falls on the floor because you are an American and you don't know how to eat a glazed doughnut with whip cream and cherries on top of an ice cream cone.
THE MOMENT WHEN …you are asked to introduce yourself in Spanish on live national radio.
THE MOMENT WHEN…you see children walking an hour and a half to get to school where they receive the only meal they will eat that day.
THE MOMENT WHEN…a girl you are talking to starts to cry and tells you that a gang member tried to kill her earlier that day because he mistook her for someone else.
THE MOMENT WHEN…one of the pastors tells you about his newborn son that had only a 5% chance of living because he cannot afford the surgery. All he can do is praise God and give him glory until he is in tears even though he has every reason to ask why this is happening to him. His baby is now a week and a half old.
THE MOMENT WHEN… you step back and can't believe that this is God's plan for your life. That every day you get to witness God's tremendous live for His children.
