Here, in Rwanda, we found out that was Elijah’s birthday coming up.
We gathered money.
We bought him and his family food; rice.
Some people went to his house to celebrate and deliver his gifts.
The following Sunday, Elijah stood up and gave a testimony.
Elijah told the church that he just celebrated his first birthday, ever.
The following week Jack had a birthday.
At the house we waited for him to come home.
When he walked through the door, Mary threw water on him as we sang happy birthday.
We handed him his card and served him food first.
I have always taken birthdays for granted but seeing these two men celebrate with innocence opened my eyes to the world.
In past countries, kids don’t know how old they are.
Kids don’t even know their birth day.
Moses, our contact this month, doesn’t even know when he was born.
He now celebrates on the day he became born again.
