Hello all! Yes, I’m still alive. Haiti has not done me in…yet.
This country is so beautiful in its own special way. I have truly enjoyed my time here!
As a recap, team ROAR along with team Free to Be have been working with Together We Can in Montrouis (pronounced Mo-we). Stephen and Autumn Byxbe have been such a blessing to us.
One of the first things Stephen told us was that he wanted this month to be as real as possible. Ministry is not always going to be planned out so that is how we’ve been living. Stephen showed us each of the projects they have going on and we’ve been choosing where we go, what we do, and when we do it. Sometimes a certain project needs to get done so a few of us volunteer for that and the rest work on the ongoing ones or we run out of supplies and have to wait for a run into one of the bigger towns. We all have a choice between a work day and a school day. Those that go to school help teach the kids from the orphanage (the Agape House) everything from letters to multiplication to spelling. The work day people tend to either be at the farm, building- cabinets, a playground, bathroom stall doors, or whatever else needs to be done.
I have done mostly work days and spent a few days at the school.
I was prepared in my head for the hard physical labor but the mental stuff, not so much. The second day we were here I was tutoring one of the girls at the Agape House in multiplication (this is the part where you can laugh). That was hard. Most of you know math is not my subject so when the opportunity came up to help wash laundry and let a math teacher teammate take over I jumped on it (don’t judge). Funny thing is, I’ve had to help one of the girls with her homework and it was multiplication, again. We both learned.
Learning to live in community has been one of the hardest challenges. We still are learning about each other and what makes us tick. Some messy stuff has happened, but God is working through it. He is building an amazing community of Christians who are taking his Kingdom into every nation!
When you think of it, please pray for us. I believe we are under spiritual attack right now. Several of us, including our contacts, have had nightmares and bouts of not feeling well along with other things here and there. For the most part it has all been good, but I am convinced satan is not happy we are here.
