‘Jesus said, “Whatever you did for the least of these; you did for me.”
I’ve been thinking about this a lot today. Sometimes on the race, we have a lot of free time. This can be a wonderful thing, it can also be a terrible thing. The truth is, it’s in the moments that we are not busy, when we have lots of free time, that we begin to see clearly what we worship and value.
Do I seek the Lord and ways to serve Him? Do I look for comforts, like food, social media, entertainment. How do I spend my money? Do I look for ways to love others or do I focus on myself and what I want? These are hard questions.
Sometimes, as in the verse, Jesus is disguised around us – not only in the obvious situations; e.g. A homeless person begging for food or money, but also in the less subtle situations too. The person we see who looks like they have been crying; the person who looks stressed and angry; the person who is hurt or in pain; the person struggling under a load they are carrying.
How do I respond in those situations? Do I see opportunities to serve Jesus? Do I shine His light and love into their lives? Or do I turn away, pretending not to notice or making excuses for why I can’t help?
Look for Jesus in disguise today. Look for the people He is placing around you who desperately need His love, peace, joy or encouragement. It might be a friend or family member. It may be your spouse. Maybe a colleague or teammate. Or maybe a stranger. Whoever it is, I challenge you – and myself – today to see them and not to turn Jesus away.
