So for the past couple of weeks we have been coming to Pollo Rey for internet, it is the Dominican equivalent of KFC and there is free internet here…so obviously here we are. On Saturday night we came for internet and we ran into a group of Dominican men that others in our squad had been talking to, so we just smiled and said “Hola”. They started playing some Christian music (kind of loudly) in Pollo Rey and we all got excited…singing along and saying things like “I KNOW this song!!” Kameron and Kyle started talking to the guys and it turns out they are in a Christian rap band!! You can possibly understand my excitement of this random blessing…favorite musical genre…and one thing led to another and they extended an invitation to us to attend their concert that very same evening. We asked where it was located…if it was within walking distance as we have NO money for transportation, etc. They said that it was too far to walk to, but because we expressed the interest we did they offered to pick us up at 9:00 at our beloved Pollo Rey in their special van…don’t worry it had windows and no there wasn’t actually an exchange of candy or a picture of a lost puppy…
Actually it was a camp/revival/worship service that went from 9pm – 12am and then there was an intermission and THEN the concert started. But let me just say that the highlight of my night wasn’t rocking out in SPANISH to Jesus, or being taught to dance by a random Dominican man who saw my Cripp walk and decided I had potential…but it was being with hundreds of Dominican teens and men and women our own age who were together for the same reason we are here…to worship and praise our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. That part was awesome!! As of yet I haven’t been in the presence of people my own age in this country who want to worship God. For us church for us has been kids and old people. Not bad, just kind of sad, but true. But when we went to this concert we got to see where they were all hiding…in a gazebo/pavilion in the backwoods of San Juan, Dominican Republic. I’m pretty sure the concert went all night long, but we left at 3am because we needed to be back and rested for house worship in the morning. It was amazing to be there and to see the rock/rap concerts of my youth at the Harvest Crusade or different Youth for Christ events, they are happening ALL OVER THE WORLD!! God is awesome!
