I was recently listening to a Francis Chan sermon and something he said really stuck with me, so I want to share it with you. He was giving an example of taking God’s commands seriously. He said “what if I told my daughter to go clean her room and what if she came back to me and hour later and says ‘dad I memorized what you said, I can quote it verbatim’… Or if she says ‘I had a bunch of friends over and we did a study on what it would look like if we cleaned my room’…Why were these commands given? Where they given for us to memorize and just study?!” There are given so that we do, so that we go.
There are incredible commands throughout scripture, if only we would take them seriously and live by them! I believe that when Jesus said “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.” (Mark 16:15), that He meant go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. And in Matthew (10:8) when He said “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give”, it means just that.
I love studying scripture and am starting a deeper study of the Bible to really understand it better, but lets not get so distracted studying what it says that we miss actually doing what says. There is nothing wrong with studying the bible, but allow it to motivate you to action! Take God seriously. I want to challenge you and I to read through the gospels and take literally what Jesus commands. How different would our lives look? Have we worked so hard to make our lives comfortable that we miss living the way Christ commands us to? Choose today to change that!
