Team GLOW in Odessa, Ukraine

Each Saturday at the church we’re working with, they have English club. This past Saturday we mostly just observed how it all works. They do an ice breaker, talk about a topic, split into groups for an activity that relates to the topic, have question time to discuss the topic, and end with a little game. The topic this time was the “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.” Then during our activity time we split up amongst the Ukrainians and had to come up with a list about “The Seven Wonders of Ukraine.” During question time we talked about our favorite “wonder” and if there was anything not on the list that we thought there should be. For the last activity, in our small groups, we had to build the tallest structure we could using only 10 pieces of paper and some paper clips. My group built a rocket shaped structure. Next Saturday we’ll be more involved by helping lead the activities as we talk about the topic of ‘mass media.’ (Today, Wednesday, we were able to go around the neighborhood and pass out fliers inviting people to English club for this Saturday. Pray for a good turnout.)

Sunday we went to church service. The church is only about 2 years old and most of the people that go there are fairly new Christians. The past few weeks they’ve been talking about the basics of what they believe, to help come up with a doctrinal statement for the church and for people to understand exactly what they believe. This week we talked about Baptizing and communion.

For the past couple of days, my team and I have started to read through the book of John together and discuss it each morning. I think it’s really important for us to be in the Word and praying together to unify us and help us stay on track with what we’re here for, to serve God and shine His light wherever we go.

Jesus is the light of the world!

John 1: 6-9

“There came a man who was sent from God; his name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all men might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light. The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.”
