Day 178: Jinja, Uganda

Before moving to our contacts in Uganda, our squad met up for a weekend of camping along the Nile in Jinja.

 Day 179: Jinja, Uganda

As a squad we got to raft the Nile today! Our team did a really good job of not flipping our raft over until the final rapid, the “Nile Special,” which demolished all of us. I rode rest of the rapid underneath the boat which was quite the experience!

 Day 180: Jinja, Uganda

If you’ve never seen the rain pour in Africa, you are missing out. There is no such thing as a drizzle or a light rain here; when the rain starts, it pours. Stephanie and I spent our lunch underneath the cover of the cabana, talking, laughing, and listening to Toto’s “Africa” while watching it pour all around us. It’s moments like these that remind just how special this life really is.

 Day 181: Wobulenzi, Uganda

This is Moses and his wife, Mama Luzinda. They are an incredible couple who serve the Lord with all of their hearts. Not only have they taken in their almost 2 year old grandson, they are raising five other children who were orphaned. We are their first World Race team and I am so excited to work alongside them as we serve their church and the community of Wobulenzi.

Day 182: Wobulenzi, Uganda

Jeremiah is my baby for the month. In fact, I’m trying really hard to figure out how to take him home with me (though his grandparents don’t really agree with that plan). When I was playing my guitar, he decided to pick up his grandpa’s and play right along.

Day 183: Wobulenzi, Uganda

We visited Cornerstone Community School today. I spent the majority of my day with the 3 and 4 year olds, teaching them rhymes and songs and helping them with their “work”. The teacher has 33 students all by herself so she welcomed the help. This is Christy, she’s the youngest in the class at not quite 3. She liked to come up to me, but if I got near her, she would cry. She didn’t understand why my skin was a different color and it scared her. If you’ve never had a child cry because of your skin color, it’s a hilarious experience.

 Day 184: Wobulenzi, Uganda

We did door to door evangelism in the community today where we shared the gospel and prayed for people. Cosim, Duncan, Maureen, and Esther all gave their lives to Jesus today!

 Day 185: Wobulenzi, Uganda

Today is International Women’s Day! We celebrated by learning to cook chapati the African way. Mama Luzinda taught us and tried to marry me off to a boy she has taken in at the same time. If the Africans get their way, each one of us will be married off to one of their own.

 Day 186: Wobulenzi, Uganda

We visited Hope Infant and Primary School today. Moses started this school for orphans and vulnerable children (kids whose parents cannot afford to send them to school). I was asked if I knew how to teach pronouns and handed a primary 5 class to teach them all about pronouns for an hour (these are the 5th graders I taught for the morning). The teacher came in to give the students a test about the lesson and one of the sentences they had to change was “Nayiga (my Ugandan name) is a brown lady.” I guess I’m more tan than I realized!

 Day 187: Wobulenzi, Uganda

These are the kids from the House of Champions Orphanage we visited today. This orphanage is supported solely by Ebenezer Church (the church we are partnered with this month) and its members. In fact, many of the children who used to be in the orphanage have now been adopted by members of the church.
