“Had any other condition been better for you than the one in which you are in, divine love would have put you there.”
This morning I woke up early and walked out to the beach for some quiet time with Jesus. I stood at the shore watching waves crash as the water ran up and over my feet. It was peaceful, calm, perfect.
One of my deepest desires is to experience some of the greatest mysteries of the ocean. Dolphins chasing a boat, a shark fin swimming on the surface, or specifically this morning… a giant whale jumping out of the water. I’ve yet to experience these things, but I can’t begin to describe how strong of a desire I have for them.
So as I stood in the ocean talking with God, I became conscious of where my heart was really at. I was looking for a whale! I was scanning this gigantic ocean left and right waiting for this whale to jump out of the water. My head was turning right just as quick as it was turning left because what if I was looking to the left side and the whale jumped out of the right side? I was determined to see this whale!
Hold up!! (Imagine the scene on the TV freezing and the background music cutting out)
In that very moment, as I was earnestly seeking this whale, I realized I was missing the whole point. Right in front of me, the ocean danced at my feet. God didn’t have a whale for me.. he had this ENTIRE ocean!! How naive of me to think that God only wants to give me a whale when He can give me the entire Ocean in which the whale lives in.
Whales are huge! But how much larger is the Ocean that they live in?
As it explains in the book Captivating, women have a tendacy to feel as though someones holding out on us. That they are telling us the truth, but maybe not the ENTIRE truth. Which makes us question whether or not we really trust people and what they are “really” doing. The biggest problem about this, and I’ll be the first to admit it… is we take that mindset into our relationship with God.
“God, you’re fully capable of making a whale jump, why are you holding out on me?” or “God, you’re fully capable of making my current situation better, why aren’t you doing it?”
My response to this is, we are missing the point. Is God fully capable of fulfilling all of our hearts desires? Absolutely! Does God want to give us those things? I believe He does. But I’m convinced God wants us to desire more. Desire bigger things. When I think big, I think whale. God proved the whale wasn’t big enough, so He compared the whale to the Ocean. But here’s the thing. As BIG and endless as the ocean looks, God says “Desire more, seek more.”
Him.
Desire God, seek God, seek His face and not just the things he has to give us in His hands. Simply because there is nothing greater.
