On the race, our off days are just as much of a learning experience as our ministry days. Lila and I stared at the Subway menu for a solid 5 minutes trying to figure out how to communicate what we wanted. After deciding that the 15cm must be the 6 inch (shame we left our ruler at home), Lila confidently asks, “Can I have the 15cm 6-inch turkey?” Laugh at us. We sure did.
We spent this first week in Tegucigalpa, Honduras doing ministry alongside our host who works with an organization called Youth for Christ. This past Thursday, we had the opportunity to prepare spaghetti and rice for the men, women, and children that eat, sleep, and work at the city trash dump. As soon as our truck pulled up, people swarmed to get what was likely their only hot meal for the week. We passed out plates of food and bags (yes, bags) of water to as many people as we could provide for. Praying over the food and for these people didn’t seem like enough, even after feeding them. We have so much and they have so little. We watched as they continued digging through the city dump looking for food alongside dogs and vultures. What really blew me away was the ‘church’ that was set up in the middle of the mess we were standing in. Three old movie theater tarps were tied together to create a roof over a small podium and maybe 10 stools (old desktop computer frames). Even in the murder capital city of the world, in a city trash dump, God still prevails. “Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.” Matthew 25:45
My team bounces back and forth between our hosts house and La Roca (The Rock), a church compound. The Rock serves as a church and fellowship hall, a daycare, and a school for parents that are working, but cannot afford to put their children into school. In total, the school has 3 classrooms with about 45 students ages 5-12 and the daycare has about 5 kids. Most of the students know our names and yell them out every time we arrive. CHAFFEE is written on my backpack, and since day one that’s what they’ve known me as. So great!
God has been teaching me SO much this month. You think you know… and then you realize you don’t have a clue.
Having faith in Him and His plan pays off more than anything else in this world. (I am safe & I have my beautiful, wonderful, best friend of a dog back safe)
No matter how hard we try, we will ALWAYS fall short.
Jesus LOVES us.
Jesus loves us so that we may love OTHERS.
Jesus loves us so that we may love others so that we can all glorify HIM.
The importance of balancing faith and deeds.
Which battles to flip tables for and which to lift unto Him.
The key to living like Jesus is living WITH Jesus.

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” John 14:1-4
