So… what is the point of prayer?
I mean, if the Lord knows my every thought, like the Bible says that He does, then why do I need to make my thoughts, requests, and praises known to Him through prayer?
If I am honest with myself, 98% of the time I spend praying, I am the one doing all the talking.
But let's look at the true biblical definition of prayer: communion with our God. Communion is defined as "an intimate fellowship" or "an act or instance of sharing". So what is the purpose of prayer? To be in COMMUNION with God… to be intimate with Jesus Himself! And in order to share in fellowship with the Lord, we MUST discipline ourselves not only to SPEAK to our Father, but to LISTEN. He has so much to say to us… if we would only take the time to still our hearts and be SILENT in His presence.
The truth is that the purpose of prayer is NOT a means of getting things for ourselves, but rather that we may truly know God HIMSELF. Through prayer, we are seeking the very heart of our Creator… It is the secret place where He is able to make us more like His Son. It is the place where our scars are healed and where the broken pieces of our heart are made whole. It is where Jesus instills His truths into our hearts and our minds, and where we find out just how beautiful we are because WE WERE MADE IN HIS IMAGE.
Yes, YOU. You are His workmanship… and in YOU He finds favor.
So… devote yourselves to prayer. Practice listening more than you speak. Fall on your knees every single day, seeking intimacy with your Heavenly Father and proclaiming to Him "Oh, how I need thee… Every hour I need thee".
Because He is all we need.
