What is a missionary?  If you were to ask me one month ago what I thought the life of a missionary looks like,  I would have conjured up images of bible-toting preachers living in squalor and evangelizing to the masses.  During the short time I have spent in Wellington, NZ, my preconceptions have been radically transformed.

I have spent the past couple weeks working under the care of a local church called “LifeSwitch.”  Specifically, the church runs large youth camps twice a year (Camp Survivor), and my team and I have been under the tutelage of Brenden, the director of these camps.  It is currently “the off-season” in between camps and our overarching goal has been to visit the non-Christian families of the children who have attended these camps and share a little bit of God’s love with them.

I have discovered that although there is a time and place for direct door to door evangelism, one very effective means to soften people’s hearts toward Christ is just to show them some of God’s love.  The past week, we have been doing this in the form of service.  Through simple tasks such as cleaning people’s homes and yards, we have been able to establish relationships with these non-Christian families.  We just held a successful BBQ Tuesday with an attendance of around 100.  We have also been leading children ministries on Sundays.  I will discuss more about how God has been working in my next post, but in the meantime, here is a glimpse into how my team has spent the past week.
