If you're gearing up to leave on the World Race or you've already been on the field for 9 months this list contains some of P Squads favourite apps. Whether you want to edit pictures, listen to music or have fun with teammates these apps can get the job done. Even if you’re not on the race there might be something here you can find useful back home. (All apps and links[app name] are from the Apple App Store…Sorry Android users.)
I've attempted to find as many free ones as possible to help out with the limited budget most racers have 😉
Photos
Instagram – Price: Free
iPhone(No iPad specific version, but still compatible. To find it on the iPad change the search field to iPhone.)
If you don't already have it, I highly recommend it. Having the ability to post pictures to Facebook, Twitter, etc. all at the same time helps tremendously when Wifi is hard to come by.
There are dozens of Instagram editors that give you more options such as collages, different filters and stamps here are a few:
Moldiv – Price: Free (various extras: $0.99 and up)

One of the best ways to call home available. Stay in touch with family members and friends that have Skype for free or add Skype credit and call any cellphone or landline. Video calls can sometimes be choppy so try voice calls on slower Internet speeds. Also features text chat and voice mail.
Viber – Price: Free
iPhone
WiFi Required
Text and call any Viber user from around the globe for free. Tends to work with weaker connection speeds than iMessages and it even works for those lovable Android users out there. You should get this before leaving America, as it requires confirmation through an active cell number.

For all those confusing currency exchanges this is your answer. The free version allows you to store ten different currencies at a time and with WiFi you can get the most recent exchange rates. Includes a calculator to help out with all those tricky calculations.
Hostelworld.com – Price: Free
iPhone
Squad leaders, logistics and team leaders this will help you out when your trying to find a place to stay. If the log doesn't have any hostels or you want to try something new check out the 35,000 properties it has worldwide.
Dropbox – Price: Free 2GB storage (you can earn more free space through different incentives, like linking Dropbox to other apps, etc. I currently have 8 GB for free. Payment plans available for more storage.)
iPad and iPhone
Having an online storage system can save you from a lot of stress over potential theft of your hard drive. Dropbox allows you to sync photos, videos and documents online where a pickpocket can't take them from you. Also if you set up your account with a computer back home you can send pics home when you get strong WiFi. Then your parents/friends/etc. can remove them from your Dropbox freeing up the space for more files. You could upgrade and get more space but if you follow this method you can make due with less. (There are many other options for online storage available, this is just the one I use)
Tunnel Bear – Price: Free 500mb/month (extra gig for tweeting about the app, each month)
$2.99 Unlimited one month
$7.99 Unli. 3 Months
$29.99 Unli. 12 month
iPad and iPhone (also on OSX)
Do you have Netflix but can't use it because you're in Eastern Europe? Are you in Vietnam and unable to use Facebook? Tunnel Bear sets up a private network to protect your Internet usage from local hackers. It also hides your location allowing you to use services like Netflix or Pandora outside of the US.
Music/Audio
Podcasts – Price: Free
iPad and iPhone
Download sermons, music or any other kind of podcast that might interest you. Whenever you get WiFi just make sure to download the most recent episodes. That way once your back enjoying village life you have your podcasts ready to go. Bethel Church Sermon of the Week, Ravi Zacharias Let My People Think(Sermons), The Going Quantum Podcast(dubstep, electro, drum and bass music), and Freakanomics Radio(by the author of the books by the same name) are some of my favourites.
Songza – Price: Free (Club Songza subscription: $3.99/month removes ads, gives more skips)

If you already have a kindle and are trying to decide between your iPad and Kindle the Kindle app for iPad could be the answer. Though you could always bring both if you really want to.
