What does it mean to be gypsy?

According to thefreedictionary.com a gyspy by definition is:

“A member of a people that arrived in Europe in migrations from northern India around the 14th century, now also living in North America and Australia. Many Gypsy groups have preserved elements of their traditional culture, including an itinerant existence and the Romany language.”

Many gypsies reside in Romania. And unfortunately the fact that they are gypsy alone ‘earns’ them the right to be looked down upon. A comparison has been drawn between them and the view of African Americans in the 1950’s throughout the United States.

It’s heartbreaking.

What does it mean to be gypsy?

It means that you will be offered limited employment, you will endure daily racial slurs and your kids will be mistreated and neglected at school.

Yesterday my team traveled to a gypsy village outside the city. Many if not all of the street kids Oaza serves are from gypsy descent. We went to visit a family that Oaza is helping to build a home. We got the chance to meet an 11-year-old girl who used to live in one of the group homes of Oaza. She has since then been placed back with her family at her mother’s request and ability to provide.

As one might imagine…it was an emotional day…as the realities of poverty often are. But it was a good day. A day to witness…and do I daresay…become…a conduit of God’s grace.

Oaza provided the family with clothes, food and supplies…as our American team provided a bit of laughter and entertainment for the village kids.

Not long ago, I was blessed to hear Gary Haugen from International Justice Mission speak. As he referenced his experience with the genocide in Rwanda and his current work in the human trafficking arena, he asked a profound question…

“Instead of asking, where’s God? I ask, where are God’s people?”

Perhaps God would ask the same thing.

In Luke 17 when Jesus was asked when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The Kingdom of God does not come with your careful observation, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is within you.”

(one of the many smiles!)

I can tell you that the kingdom of God is within Oaza…as they choose to be God’s grace to these children. Please pray blessings and faithfulness for all of the staff in this ministry.

What does it mean to be gypsy?

On a lighter note…according to another definition it is ‘one inclined to a nomadic, unconventional way of life.’
