success

noun

  1. the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.

^This is the literal google definition of success. Over the past month the Lord has been teaching me about how I aim for success and how I measure it.

What does it mean to be successful? How do you know when you have been successful? How do you know when you have hit the mark? Who is measuring whether or not you were successful?

At the beginning of this month my team and I sat down and asked ourselves what would make this month a success. The difference in all of our answers was amazing. It’s so easy to write a list of what notches we had to hit and what standards we had to meet to be counted as “successful”.

I find that I do this often in life.

If this person accepts me, I’ll be successful.

If I make this much money, I’ll be successful.

If I please this person, I’ll be successful.

If my boss notices me, I’ll be successful.

If I know my gifts and talents, I’ll be successful.

If I please all the people, I’ll be successful.

If I can look like that person, I’ll be successful.

If I bring ___ amount of people to Jesus, I’ll be successful.

If I say all the right things, I’ll be successful.

If I can quote all the right scripture, I’ll be successful.

But let me speak some truth, this won’t ever end. We won’t ever reach the mark that we set for ourselves. We won’t ever meet the mark that others set for us. We won’t ever reach the mark for something that is absolutely unattainable.

Reality is that success is following after the Lord. Doing the will of the Lord is success. Living according to the Word of the Lord is success. Stop reaching for success in the  world and start accepting the success you’ve already achieved in the Lord.

“There is no wisdom, no insight… no plan that can succeed against the Lord.” Proverbs 21:30

“Commit your actions to the LORD, and your plans will succeed.” Proverbs 16:3
