I would have to say that one of the worst, if not the worst, feelings in the world is the feeling of being forgotten.
I mean think back to a time when you felt forgotten by someone you care about? It’s a horrible feeling.
Being on the race, and continents away from home, that feeling rises up every now and again. I have to admit sometimes I feel forgotten by friends and family back home. I sometimes even feel forgotten by my fellow squadmates that are navigating around the world with me.
Sometimes the feeling of being forgotten is accurate, and other times it is false. But either way, the feeling is felt, and it’s not one that I enjoy.
Last month, I read a book called “The Bible Jesus Read” by Phillip Yancey. Yancey focuses on certain books in the old testament, and shows the relevance they have to our society today. Some of the books he highlights are Deuteronomy and the Prophet books like Isaiah, Jeremiah, etc…
In Deuteronomy, Moses is relaying messages to the Israelites that God is speaking. And as I’m reading through it, I just keep on seeing this message from God.
“When you’re living it up in the land of plenty… DON’T FORGET ABOUT ME.”
In the prophet books, Yancey brings up an interesting point of how God’s heart is crying out for His people to remember Him, and return to Him. Reading the books from that perspective, you see a God whose heart breaks when He is forgotten.
Remember that horrible feeling you felt when you were forgotten?
Well, God feels that too… If anything He feels that times infinity since He created us for relationship, and we so often forget to cultivate and grow our relationship with Him.
I could just imagine how His heart breaks when we go an entire day without even acknowledging His existence and presence in our lives.
Often, it’s when our lives are going fine and dandy and “all is well” in the world, that we forget about God the most.
Think about it. When you’re having an amazing time and enjoying something, don’t you want someone that you care about to enjoy it with you? Don’t you want to call them up and tell them to join you?
Then think about it from the other end, how do you think the person feels when they KNOW you’re having an awesome time, and the KNOW that you didn’t invite them?
like garbage… I know that’s how I would feel.
And why should we think that God would feel any different? He made us in His image, and He has feelings.
“When you have eaten your fill in this land, be careful not to forget the Lord, who rescued you from slavery in the land of Egypt.” Deut. 6:11b-12.
I want to have a heart that thanks God in the good times and the bad times. Not one that just calls out to him when things are running amuck, or going downhill fast. I don’t want to only remember God in times of need and crisis.
I desire to remember Him and thank Him when all is well, and when I’m feeling like the “Queen of the world!” (shout out to old school Leo). I want God to be a part of, no I want God to be the CENTER of my joyful moment, my fun day, my “best day ever!”s.
“Show love to the Lord your God by walking in his ways and holding tightly to him.” Deut. 11:22
I wanna show God love, in my life… and let him know He’s is not forgotten. He IS my life. And I wanna make sure my actions reassure Him of that.
