This month has really flown by and I have experienced so much in Honduras. Heart of Christ, the ministry we worked alongside does so many different things. One of the main things Mama Grace, our host, does is rescue women and young girls from rape and incest. She offers them a safe house to come to if they want to escape what they are going through. Right now she houses a 14 year old girl named Carlita who was raped by her father and her father’s friend starting at the age of 6. She has a mental capacity of a 3 year old. We celebrated her 14th birthday on Saturday and it was her first birthday party. She was so thrilled! We gave her baby clothes and clothes to wear at the hospital. She does not fully grasp that she is pregnant and had a hard time choosing the name for her daughter. Gracie and her husband picked out the name by deduction. Carlita’s baby girl is going to be named
Amy Alexandra. She is going to have a sea section because she is so small and have a nurse pretty much be in charge of Amy. Gracie is unsure if she is going to be able to nurse at all. This is just one of the girls stories that live her at Heart of Christ. There are two other young girls that have children and four young boys that were left her by their mothers who had being raped or products of incest.
I can’t imagine how hard it would be to grow up in this environment of constant fear and not being able to trust members of your family. So many times I have taken for granted my parents and family. Growing up in a Christian home has been such a blessing! Both my parents would do anything for their children and demonstrated Godly lifestyles to us. They showed me love and compassion when I didn’t always deserve it. I have learned to be thankful for the environment that I grew up in and how safe I have always been.
